Russia and Moldova sign the ceasefire that freezes the conflict, by most accounts through Yeltsin and Snegur. The agreement binds Russia's 14th Army to strict neutrality and leaves its status and withdrawal to later talks; the line has held for more than thirty years.
Snegur commits Moldovan forces in Transnistria and, in July, signs the ceasefire with Yeltsin that freezes the conflict.
Snegur dies aged 83, a founding figure of a state still caught between Europe and Russia.
